There are some things we should do not because statistics tell us to or our fear of destroying the world is wearing on us but rather because they are simply good to do. The simple act of taking your clothes from you washer to the line is good.
I learned this from my mother. Our line stretched from the back porch to a huge Elm tree. You could not reach the clothes because the yard sloped down, the air blew through the shirts, socks and slacks above our heads as we played. We were often sent outside ( there were nine of us ) but when my mom came out with the laundry basket, a connection was made- she entered our playground. I loved watching her and her system; the first piece of clothing got one pin to the left and the rest of the pins would share connecting sleeves to legs. One after the other she would hang what we had worn, then slide the rope through the pulley making room for the next. Standing in one place on the back deck, watching us, thinking her own thoughts, only buying new pins when the old ones broke.
Her pins were weathered from rain, wind and sun and turned soft to the touch and brown in color. As a new mom with my first clothesline I actually looked for brown clothes pins thinking my moms were a particular brand. Her’s were branded by lots of use.
So it is that I have been hanging clothes to dry since my first baby, because that’s what moms do.
At some point (when I actually owned a dryer) I thought, “Wow, this is super easy to toss in the wet and take out the dry.” And it is, it is easy but not always necessary. Let me be clear, I do not hang my clothes out in the winter. I have when I have been determined to be super frugal but discovered that the dryer actually heats up my babies’ room and they fall asleep to the revolving sound.
It is good because we conserve energy not because we are afraid of global warming but because we care, because why be wasteful? Because the smell is intoxicating-resting your head on a crisp pillow case. There is not a smell in the world like clothes dried outdoors, how they soak up the very smell of warmth and ozone after a rain is a magical mystery. Wrinkles disappear, stains are bleached out, and it’s free. Go hang your clothes because it is good.
